Positive Versus Normative Analysis in Economics
Question: Discuss about the Positive Versus Normative Analysis in Economics. Answer: Introduction: Primarily, the United Arab Emirates economy is an open market economy made up of various sectors. Essentially, it is made up of the producing, households, the government, financial sector, and rest the world sectors. These sectors operate intermittently and in association with each other. Notably, the countrys circular model comprises of the major exchanges and flow of money, services, and goods that occur between the economic agents (Mankiv, 2011). The actions of the various participants in the market economy generate national income, expenditure, and output, which then flow from one component to the other. Therefore, the circular flow model of the UAE involves the interactions between individuals, firms, the government and the rest of the world. The UAE has various households who act as consumers of services and goods produced within and outside the country. Primarily, households in the UAE supply firms with factors of production such as human capital, land, enterprise and real capital. Consequently, they receive rewards and income for the factors of production (Beggs, 2017). For instance, landowners in the country supply their land to firms and receive rent as compensation. In the same way, entrepreneurs provide their enterprise and in return they receive profits. On the other hand, the countrys labor force offer their human capital in various industries and firms and are paid in the form of wages and salaries. Lastly, capitalists within the state provide capital and in exchange receive interest as the factor payment (Beggs, 2017). Notably, the households may choose to consume all their income or save some instead of spending it all. The circular flow of income model for the UAEe Predominantly, firms in the country play the role of producing services and goods for the households and businesses within and outside the UAE. As such, local companies produce goods and services meant for domestic and export consumption. Often, they utilize the factors of production provided by the households to produce these commodities (Khan, n.d.). After they produce the commodities, they sell them to households who then pay for them with the income they earned from selling their factors of production. This way, the firms earn income. With the income earned, companies may invest in capital assets. Thus, they may purchase capital goods from other businesses. Mainly, the countrys public sector is controlled and managed by the government. Typically, the government earns its revenues through taxing households and firms within the state (Bogdan, 2010). The payment of taxes to the government represents a leakage from the economys flow of income. Nonetheless, it often injects money back into the circular flow by spending on public goods and services (Bogdan, 2010). Today, the UAE government spends on healthcare services, defense, and security among others. It also supports the poor and those that are unable to get employment within the prevailing market conditions. Predominantly, the countrys financial sector comprises of banks and non-bank institutions. Typically, these organizations act as intermediaries between economic agents. Often, they receive money in terms of savings. They also lend money to households and firms. Additionally, they engage in investment activities within the economy. Whereas savings is a leakage, investments is an injection of money into the countrys circular flow of income. As a whole, the UAE economy participates in international trade. For this reason, it pays for goods and services that are imported and earns income from commodities that are exported from the nation. Foreign consumers buy domestic products, thereby injecting income into the circular flow. Positive and Normative Statements Typically, in economic analysis, economic agents make various statements about the prevailing economic conditions. Characteristically, these statements may be classified either as positive or normative statements. It is imperative to note that positive statements are always based on what is happening in the economy and can be proven as true or false depending on the available facts (Beggs, 2015). More specifically, these statements use scientific principles to arrive at objective and testable conclusions. On the other hand, normative statements are subjective and opinion based (Caplin Schotte, 2008). For this reason, they cannot be proved or disapproved. Although they use factual evidence as support, they are often not factual. Instead, they incorporate the underlying morals and opinions of the individual making the statement. References Caplin, A. Teen Depression Problem Solution Essay free essay sample
In fact, ââ¬Å"11% of adolescents have a depressive disorder by age 18,â⬠according to the National Institute of Mental Healthââ¬â¢s website. This statistic may not seem like a lot, but it means that 11% of teens have a serious problem; they feel like this frequently, yet still go on, in most cases without treatment. Although feeling depressed happens to everybody, according to Medical News Today, most people donââ¬â¢t get it as badly as these 11% do, and also not as often. But if youââ¬â¢ve ever experienced this feeling, imagine it happening all the time or reoccurring at unpredictable intervals. Also, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrationââ¬â¢s website, ââ¬Å"Depression rates triple between the ages of 12 and 15 (from 5. 1% to 15. 2%). â⬠This shows the massive increase in depression among teens, but so what? Well, this disorder changes peopleââ¬â¢s lives, and sometimes it even ends them. According to Suicide. org, ââ¬Å"Over 90 percent of people who die by suicide have a mental illness at the time of their death. We will write a custom essay sample on Teen Depression Problem Solution Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page And the most common mental illness is depression. â⬠Imagine teens ending their lives, because of a disease many people donââ¬â¢t even recognize as a disease. Many others tell them, ââ¬Å"Snap out of it! â⬠, but those people have no idea how crushing and consuming the feelings can be. Too many people are uneducated, and this can lead to worsened effects of depression. Another lasting effect of depression that not many people know about is bipolar disease. ââ¬Å"15% of teens with depression eventually develop bipolar disorder,â⬠says Teenhelp. com. Again, this disease affects peopleââ¬â¢s lives, not only the victims, but the people surrounding them too. Family and friends can be affected greatly by having a depressed sibling or friend. According to Helpguide. rg, ââ¬Å"If someone you love is depressed, you may be experiencing any number of difficult emotions, including helplessness, frustration, anger, fear, guilt, and sadness. These feelings are all normal. Itââ¬â¢s not easy dealing with a friend or family memberââ¬â¢s depression. And if you donââ¬â¢t take care of yourself, it can become overwhelming. â⬠With the number of depressed people so high, imagine the number of people that are close to those with the disease; those people are suffering as well. All in all, this disease is terribly effective at changing peoples lives for the worse, and we need to help solve it. Three possible solutions for controlling and preventing depression are reducing pressure on teens, making sure people get a proper nightââ¬â¢s sleep, and exercising. One way to help prevent and/ or cure depression is to reduce the amount of pressure put on teens. Many adults might think teens just complain too much, or that theyââ¬â¢re exaggerating about how much work they have and how stressed they are, but Media. swarthmore. edu disagrees. ââ¬Å"Early adolescents deal with a number of physical, cognitive, social and environmental change that often occur together and may increase their risk for a variety of difficulties, includingâ⬠¦ depression. Like I said before, depression rates triple between the ages 12 and 15, which could very possibly be due to the enormous amounts of pressure put on teens. Sadly, many people are unaware of this, and dismiss behavior as ââ¬Å"moody teen syndromeâ⬠or something of the sort. However, these signs are vital to early diagnosis, wh ich could end up saving a teenââ¬â¢s life. If there was less pressure put on teens however, maybe suicide from depression wouldnââ¬â¢t be the 3rd leading cause of death among teens. Healthyconsumer. com also says that, ââ¬Å"Teenagers are under an enormous amount of pressure. Expectations are very high in many aspects of their lives, and to live up to those expectations, they occasionally must sacrifice doing things they want to do for things that have to do. â⬠This could be another main contributor to depression. If you look at little kids playing, theyââ¬â¢re laughing and happy, because theyââ¬â¢re doing what they love, but if you look at teens and adults, you rarely see them playing. If you ask a teenager why they arenââ¬â¢t playing, theyââ¬â¢ll usually grumble, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t have time, I have too much homework. â⬠Homework usually starts picking up around 6th or 7th grade; depression rates triple between the ages of 12 and 15. Maybe if teens were less stressed with homework and such, they could do more things they enjoy, and maybe theyââ¬â¢d be less depressed. A second way to help prevent and/ or cure this crippling disease is to ensure people get a proper nightââ¬â¢s sleep. Donââ¬â¢t you love the feeling after a long, relaxing, refreshing nightââ¬â¢s sleep? You might be thinking, ââ¬Å"Sure, but how does that help with depression? â⬠Well, Chris Iliades, MD says that, ââ¬Å"Teens whose parents set a 10 p. m bedtime (and enforce it) are 25% less likely to experience teenage depressionâ⬠¦ according to a study of data from 15,000 adolescents. The potential benefits of this solution could be huge; being able to cure the crushing effects of depression by sleeping seems like a simple and easy thing to do, yet how simple is it? With all of the work students are assigned, this takes us back to the issue of too much pressure on teens. However, if we were able to conquer that, and teachers st arted assigning less work, imagine what a liberating and positive effect it would have on teens! Also, sleep can be an alternative to more serious treatments for depression, for people who arenââ¬â¢t ready to take that step, according to longevity. bout. com. ââ¬Å"Sleep impacts many of the chemicals in your body, including serotonin. People with a deficiency in serotonin are more likely to suffer from depression. You can help prevent depression by making sure you are getting the right amount of sleep, between 7 and 9 hours each night. â⬠Like it says here, sleep is one of the bodyââ¬â¢s natural antidepressants. If teens were able to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, it could possibly reduce depression, and all of the negative side-effects that come with it by up to 50%! This could change many teensââ¬â¢ current situations, and lead to them living happier, less stressful, more fulfilling lives. A third way to help prevent and/ or cure depression is to exercise more. Everyone knows that exercise is god for you, but can it really help cure depression? In fact, it can, according to web. md. com. They say that, ââ¬Å"When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. Like sleep, exercise is one of your bodyââ¬â¢s natural antidepressants, and is much cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription antidepressants. Also, exercise is something many people enjoy, and can be fun depending on what you do. Imagine the benefits of doing something fun that you enjoy, plus the rewards of the endorphins being released into your body! Many people are probably skeptica l that something as simple as exercise can be as beneficial as something mixed up in a lab, specifically targeted to fix depression, but Gerard Sanacova, MD and PhD, disagrees. He says that, ââ¬Å"A 2009 analysis found that exercise lightens depression as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or antidepressants. â⬠Not only is exercise as effective as CBT or antidepressants, itââ¬â¢s also easier to access, and safer for teens. In addition, exercise can be put into place in schools, which could help solve and even prevent depression is adolescents, opposed to giving everyone antidepressants, which would be very difficult, expensive, and unsafe. Itââ¬â¢s also a lot less scary and committal than antidepressants, especially for a teen who doesnââ¬â¢t want too many people finding out about their condition. There are also all of the other wonderful benefits of exercise to consider, in addition to its anti-depressive qualities. Itââ¬â¢s a win-win situation! As you can see, depression is a horrible, and serious problem among teens everywhere today, and it needs to be addressed. Three ways to solve this horrendous disease are to reduce the crushing pressure put on teens these days, raise peopleââ¬â¢s serotonin levels by getting a 7-9 hour-long nightââ¬â¢s sleep, and raise endorphin levels by getting out and exercising. All of these solutions have been proven to help, but other options include CBT, antidepressants, and therapy. If you or a loved one are wrestling with the crippling effects of depression, seek help, and educate yourselves about what you can do to defeat this horrible ailment. Just remember, youââ¬â¢re not worthless. You can always do something to right those lingering wrongs. Everyone is good at something. Thereââ¬â¢s always somebody who loves you. Youââ¬â¢re definitely not alone, and most importantly, never give up.

Prey essays
Prey essays I found Prey to be a very enjoyable book. It presents situations that could, in fact be realistic in the future, as this tends to be a common theme in Michael Crichtons writings. The book also puts forward interesting concepts in Nanotechnology that mankind is not too far from achieving. Michael Crichtons writing in Prey is ingenious because one conflict cleverly leads to another, each new conflict growing as the old one gradually fades. He utilizes the first person point of view to get the reader so immersed in the main character that he or she feels his emotions. Michael Crichtons brilliant writing creates an excellent book that will keep any reader captivated for hours on end. Prey has brought a new awareness to me of how quickly nanotechnology is developing and what a promising technology it is. Because of Michael Crichtons extensive knowledge in the field of science and his brilliant writing abilities, he is able to create a research-backed fiction book that is still enjoyable. In the bibliography, Michael Crichton states, This novel is entirely fictitious, but the underlying research programs are real. He then lists about 30 sources. This incorporation of nanotechnology into an interesting book really sparked an interest in me. I have done some research and seen that this amazing technology does have a quite promising future. The characters in prey are very well developed throughout the book. Because the book is in a first-person point of view, all of the characters are characterized by the main character, Jack. If Jack dislikes a particular person, the reader has a tendency to dislike that person as well. The characters are also very realistic, each having reasonable conflicts and a personality that remains fairly constant throughout the book. The story is largely affected by the characters in it. Often, a very large conflict in the book is an internal conflict experienced ...

Torture in Interrogation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Torture in Interrogation - Essay Example This information is even used to guard against enemy tactics and propose counter measures for our own forces. The interrogation depends mainly on torture techniques. Which are against the human rights and this violation is made in the name of national security. There is a thin line between torturing and national security priorities. Both are important and it is crucial to remain in limits while interrogating any suspects, whether terrorists or local criminals. The issue came into spotlight with the release of torture pictures and videos of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp (Leigh et al. 1). Prisoners were kept in a miserable condition and suicide attempts were a routine. The detention facility was accused of extreme torturing and interrogation. There have been deaths in the prison and released detainees gave in detail account of torturing activities carried out by the US. These activities were clearly a human rights violation and more importantly violated the Geneva Convention for th e interrogation and captivity of prisoners of war. The paper will look into the matter and discuss the use of torture during interrogation. The Geneva Convention has set aside rules and principles for conduct with prisoners or war. Their captivity and the use of torture have all been explained in detail in the convention. The convention article rules against torture in interrogation by stating that no physical or mental torture can be used for interrogation of prisoners. Prisoners must also be given rights to medical facility, hygiene, food, clothing and quarters (Tomasevski 8). They must also be allowed for their religious practices and appropriate physical activity must also be planned. In simple, the laws lay basis for basic human rights. Torturing during interrogation is not allowed and simply a violation of the convention and basic human rights. To violate these standards is simply a violation against humanity. The US administrations have taken stance to legalize torturing tech niques and narrowly defined the parameters of interrogation. Legislation could not be passed even though with ninety to nine approval rates by senate, after being vetoed by President Bush at the time (Sullivan 1). Terrorists are considered as monsters and mass murderers and are not worthy of humane treatment. The debate was highlighted in 2005 by McCain. He presented exceptional scenarios like ticking time bomb and slow fuse cases (Krauthammer 2). The urgency of these exceptional cases required torture. In simple even his policy required use of torture. Torturing is against the very fundamentals of US and is the opposite of freedom. Prisoners are tortured and interrogated on the basis of National Security priorities. The logic that torturing is necessary to extract information is used as a stance against the issue. Though, torturing is a quick way to extract information, but it is something against humanity and also the Geneva Convention. There can be no basis as to torture a human being. It is to take into consideration that most prisoners do not possess valuable or critical information and are tortured without any solid base. This further complicates the issue and raises question of using torture techniques. Many of the prisoners are tortured to the breaking point where they develop psychological or physical disorders. This fact can be taken into account by the figures at Guantanamo Bay. Similarly, at Abu Ghraib Prison almost ninety percent of prisoners were not guilty and released after interrogation and torture (Sullivan 2). They did not possess any critical information. Terrorists are not termed as prisoners of war as per the US stance, but torture in any form on a human being is a violation of basic human rights and simply a crime against humanity.

Studying Human Mobility through Photograph Geo-Tagging Research Paper
Studying Human Mobility through Photograph Geo-Tagging - Research Paper Example With 24 satellites and aided with two carrier signals, it can transmit signals accurately. However, to operate within buildings, it requires at least 4 of its satellites to have clear access to that specified area (Djuknic, & Richton, 2001). To overcome such a difficulty, assisted-GPS technology has come into limelight. It provides more accurate detail even from within buildings and also associated with it is a superior quality (Djuknic, & Richton, 2001). Georeferencing is one of the developing technologies, especially geotagging. An analysis on the research related to this field focuses on four major points: 1. Organization of georeferenced media sources 2. Data mining of organized knowledge 3. Identifying the worldââ¬â¢s landmarks and 4. Identification of the photo location, geographically(Zheng et. al, 2011) The organized knowledge used for online data mining has two parts. 1. The knowledge stored in database is actually a collection of data provided by the society itself, obta ined from several social websites. 2. The stored knowledge and corresponding mining provides multi-modal information about the stored data. (Zheng et. al, 2011) There are several methods that are used as sources for collecting information that is geotagged. Collective geotagging is one of the important methods where publicly available information uploaded by the users are geotagged and collected. Here the term, ââ¬Å"geotaggedâ⬠means that some kind of location metadata is added to the object, say a photo. Some of the important information stored in the metadata includes latitude information and place names. This process can be done either by hardware method or software method. Hardware geotagging is done through the installed cameras in mobile phones which on clicking of a photo add that information to the picture. In terms of software, which is the most prevalent method of geotagging, several photo sharing sites like Flickr and Picasso add such information through map tools. Although they are less in accuracy, the provide results with maximum relevance. (Zheng et. al, 2011) Sharing of images in online communities is an upward trend. Especially for people who post their travelogues in blogs and communities with lots of pictures of their trip. Hao. Et. al (2009) created a process which picks up the keywords from the description, identifies the pictures associated with those words and prepared a document with the results of those pictures to create an automated travelogue. Georeferencing has improved on the above process by one step and provides a more coherent result. With many people uploading photos in public and social sites, travel and tracking human mobility has been given a fresh look. Human mobility Georeferencing is considered to be the best thing to have happened for people involved in human mobility studies and for tourists. (Girardian & Blat, 2008) conducted a research to indicate that the pictures and other such information presented by the p eople voluntarily can be used to identify human mobility, especially that of tourists. The first step in understanding the mobility of humans by the authors was to make use of the large amount of data available in the online community. After conducting detailed studies in several tourist parts like Rome, Barcelona and Italy, they were able to collect detailed information about urban tourism. (Girardian & Blat, 2008) The figure shown below shows heat maps which indicate the presence of tourists in Italy along with their
